Virtualization and Global Warming
By Steve Kaplan
I was never a big fan of Al Gore’s politics, but when I heard that he was speaking at the first annual Climate Protection Summit in San Francisco, I smelled a marketing opportunity.  I approached VMware to see if they’d help sponsor the event, and much to my surprise, VMware joined other organizations such as Swinerton Construction, PG&E and SUN Microsystems in doing so.  I received an invitation to attend out of the deal – and was surprised by what I learned.

Gore started off introducing himself as, “the former next president of the United States”.  He quickly got into his two-hour presentation, though, and painstakingly detailed the escalating effects of global warming.  I have to say that I was very impressed…and very scared.  I don’t know how anyone could sit through that presentation and not be convinced of the danger facing the planet.

Since data centers are the number one consumers of electricity in the country, it’s particularly gratifying to know that we can play a small part in the battle against global warming by virtualizing most of the data center servers for our clients.  Along those lines, we’re having a couple of seminars with VMware and PG&E in December focusing on the ability of virtualization to slash power requirements.  If you attend one of our seminars, mention this newsletter and we’ll give you one of our hot off the (screen printing) press T-shirts.  You can register at www.accessflow.com.  Also, our newest comic book, VirtualMan Powers Down, will be available soon.  Here is a sketch of the last page of the book.
